Chris celebrated a birthday last month!
To celebrate I took him on surprise beach trip!
We woke up early on Saturday morning.
And by early I mean 4 am.
After showering and eating breakfast we were on the road by 5 am. He still had no clue where we were headed, his best guess was Seaworld.
While aquatic themed the trip may have been, Shamu was not on the schedule for the day.
After spending roughly two hours in the car we found the beach I was looking for.
In Longboat Key, Florida on Saturday mornings in the summer, an independent marine research facility called Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium conducts turtle walks to see the sea turtle nests and teach others about their habitats and nesting habits. We were lucky enough to catch the last one this summer.
Being the lovers of turtles and terrapins that we are, this was a very special experience for us.
The rain had held off for us and we were able to walk down the beach and learn new things about sea turtles.
We didn’t see any hatch or even see any turtles actually nest, but just going on this walk was a bucket list item halfway scratched off our list. This may not be the summer of sea turtles, but we both finally got to the beach and got to see the nests and that was enough for us.
After spending a little time hanging out on the beach and watching the waves crash towards us we finally headed out.
Chris loved his surprise and now we have an idea of where to start looking for more sea turtle nesting activities.
